Well I celebrated yet another birthday, and spent 3 wonderful days at Historicon 2009. I played two games a day and spent time kibitzing with friends, buying goodies at the Dealer Hall and did some selling at the Flea Market.
I'm back to working on my huge long term Modern Africa Wars project. I have alot of terrain I'll post some pictures of in coming posts. I also have finally gotten my grubby hands on a total of 4 Allouette III helicopters and 3 Pumas in 1/100 scale . These are almost as rare as hens teeth, and I have about half of them finished.
Most troops have been painted and based, but some still need to be painted and some I'm going to pull off the bases and individually base for smaller skirmishes.
Most South African vehicles are finished, Soviet vehicles for FAPLA are based and are base coated but not finished.
I plan to do battles in both SWA (present Namibia), Angola, and Rhodesia. If you're interested in this period, the books are *very* expensive. For the Bush War in Namibia, this is the best website there is http://www.geocities.com/sa_bushwar/. The Osprey books on the period are out of print and the pictures aren't terribly useful for the most part. Oddly, the best website for pictures to paint units from is http://www.armedassault.info/_hosted/bushwars/index.html.
It's a website devoted to an upcoming mod for the game ARMA II. Many of the artists/programmers building the mod are vets. As you page through the history pages you'll see that they've used the game engine and their mod to do mockups of some of the iconic images from the period as seen on the Bush War geocities website.
One of the other nice things about having both scifi and Modern Africa miniatures is that I'll be able to game the movie "District 9" http://www.d-9.com/ That is if I can find a good surrogate for the "prawns" aliens. I hope this movie is good, mostly this summer has been a dissapointment on the summer blockbuster front.
